Sri Harsha | Breaking the USB Cord: Wireless iOS/iPadOS/tvOS Automation with Appium

Anyone who has set up iOS automation knows the pain of USB cables: they snap, they disconnect, and they don’t scale when tests are run across multiple devices or shared continuous integration (CI) labs are built.

With iOS 17+, Apple introduced a new protocol, RemoteXPC, which acts as a secure wireless bridge that lets a computer talk directly to iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs over Wi-Fi. No more cables.

In this talk, Sri Harsha shows how Appium now uses a new protocol called RemoteXPC to automate devices wirelessly. He will cover what the protocol does, how it unlocks services like syslog streaming and device control, and what this means for test infrastructure. Attendees will see a live demo of Appium driving iOS and tvOS devices with nothing plugged in — just Wi-Fi.
Sri Harsha will also discuss the pros and cons: what works today, where it can fail, and what to watch out for when deploying this in real CI or device labs.

Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how wireless automation works, practical steps to try it out, and a roadmap for integrating it into their own Appium stacks.
