Abstract

A test oracle is the mechanism we use to tell if software is behaving or misbehaving. Whether a test passes or fails.

This workshop delves into a dozen distinct mechanisms for oracles, most of which can be automated. Automated test oracles can check for many more types of bugs that found by typical tests. Further, the automated oracles often may be separated from individual test cases, making both existing and new tests more powerful and more likely to expose bugs. The workshop explains where to look for likely places to use automated oracles and describes a dozen distinct types of oracles and how to use them.

Agenda
  • Background
    • Regression and non-regression testing
    • What we are checking for
    • A model of the test execution environment
  • Types of Oracles
    • A dozen mechanisms for automated test oracles
  • Applying Oracles
    • Differences between synchronous and asynchronous test oracles
    • Where and how to check test outcomes
  • Automating test oracles

Objectives

The goal of the workshop is to expand the understanding of the role of test oracles and how they can be employed to increase the power of tests.

Target audience

The target audience for the workshop is anyone who wants to write better tests and improve the value of new and existing tests. It is especially valuable for test automators and tool developers.

Technical requirements

The attendees will need a programming or scripting language of their choice to create an automated test oracle.

Trainer

Douglas is an independent management consultant in software quality. He earned a Computer Science degree, a Masters in Electrical Engineering, an MBA, and is a Fellow of the ASQ. He has decades of testing and test automation experience in a broad sampling of organizations across the computer software and systems industry. His primary technical focus for the last 20 years has been development and application of test oracles.
